Abstract: | The results of a microbiostratigraphic study, carried out on the Meso-Cenozoic successions outcropping along the Pollino massif (Calabria-Lucania boundary), are here shown. Biostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic correlations indicate that the four successions investigated represent most of the Cretaceous carbonate succession of the Pollino massif, ranging in age from Aptian to Lower Senonian. The Senonian succession is truncated at the top by the Paleogene transgression (Trentinara Formation SELLI, 1962). Fossi! associations and facies analysis have shown that the entire sequence have been deposited in the inner part of the Apennine Carbonate Platform. Therefore, the Pollino massif depicts the extreme south-western continuation of the carbonate terrains derived by that huge paleogeographic domain. |
