Abstract: | Passive continental margins are characterised by a seaward thickening prism of marine sediments overlying an extended basement with syn-rift depositional successions. The evolutional sequence associated with passive margins formation was formulated by severa! Authors in the 60's and it is today largely accepted. The development of passive margins ( or stable margins) begins when new oceanic lithosphere is created in a spreading centre, at the end of a continental rifting phase produced in a genera! regime of plate divergence.
