Abstract: | The Centrai Apennines Fault System is a regional negative flower structure associated with a roughly N-S trending leftlateral strike-slip fault zone. Fractal analysis of the fault trace pattern of the area has shown that the box-counting curve derived for the CAFS, as a whole, is caracterized by a fractal dimension of about 1.4. This type of analysis emphasizes that the system is an immature structure, and that the box-counting curves of the component structures of the CAFS, exibit different scaling relations. Our results suggest that fault linkege played a major role in the development and evolution of the Centrai Apennines Fault System. Possible sismotectonic implications are also discussed. |
