Abstract: Geologica! and geotechnical marine surveys carried out in front of the landslide that occurred in the vicinity of An­cona on December 13th 1982, have supplied geomorpholo-gical and geologica! information on the sea bottom. The data collected are useful for a correct interpretation of general en­vironmental problems and in particular of the landslide phenomenon. The area studied is located on the norhwestern exten­sion of the Tavernelle syncline, whose substratum consists of clays and marls with sands of the lower Pliocene gently dipping towards South-West. The pliocenic formation lies under a chaotic landslide cover of 20-25 m that extends on the shoreline (Fig. 10.8). The pliocene crops out at sea close to the shore at first for about 400 - 500 m, where it is covered by a thin veneer of recent sediments. Further offshore, a pro­grading sediment cover, about 15 m thick, occurs. [...]
