This paper and the companion geologica! map focus on the structural setting of the Gran Sasso thrust belt in the cen­trai Apennines of Italy. In this area, E-W-striking, north­verging thrust faults emplace the units of the Lazio-Abruzzi carbonate platform onto the N-S-oriented, east-verging im­bricates of the Marche foreland fold-and-thrust-belt, and onto the Adriatic foredeep.
