Abstract: The easternmost part of the Southern Alps is represent­ed by Carnic and Julian Alps and PreA!ps, corresponding to the Friuli area. Since Upper Cretaceous to Quaternary it suffered three distinct compressional phases respectively oriented NE-SW, N-S and about NW-SE. It is the most short­ened sector of the whole Southern Alps mostly due to the Neogene N-S trending compressions. The main Neogenic tec­tonic features are represented by E-W trending thrusts and folds. The Chain is an accretionary belt induced by crustal underthrusting toward the North. [...]
