Abstract: The Abruzzi - Marche thrust system is part of the Cen­trai Apennines fold and thrust belt of mainland ltaly. In our study area, which includes the southern extension of the Um­bria - Marche thrust system and the northern end of the Gran Sasso mountain range, a thick pile of turbidites which were deposited within the Messinian foredeep basin of a growing fold and thrust belt are nicely exposed.
