Abstract: The Plio-Pleistocene Lucca - Montecarlo - Vinci basin is located in northern Tuscany between the northern Apennine (north) and the Arno river (south), and between the Monti Pisani (west) and Monte Albano (east), a NW-SE trending ridge separating the studied area from the Firenze - Prato Pistoia basin (Fig. 1). Detail geological mapping and stratigraphic and paleontologie analyses recently conducted in the eastern part of the basin provided useful data to the understanding of the paleogeography and Plio-Pleistocene tectonic evolution of northern Tuscany. During middle Pliocene the area was the northern edge of the marine Val d'Elsa basin. The global sea-level drop recorded at 2.5 Ma on the eustatic sea-level change curve (HILGEN, 1991; Rio et a/ii, 1994) was presumably responsible for the regression recorded at the top of the marine succession which is conformably overlied by lagoonal deposits.
