Abstract: During the Upper Triassic (Norian) the Centra! Apennines area was affected by extensional tectonics associated with the intracontinental rifting of the future southern margin of the Tethys. These movements generated intra-platform basins characterized by euxinic deposition. The genesis and evolution of these basins was controlled by present-day E-W trending faults, which can be interpreted in two different ways; as sinistral strike-slip master faults, locally producing pull-apart basins; or as transfer faults linking different segments of an extensional belt (present-day trend N-S). Alternatively, the basins could be due to loca! collapse effects, in response to a regional uplift. To address this problem, kinematic reconstructions of the complex Cenozoic Apenninic thrustphases is needed to restore the euxinic basins to their origina! position.
