Abstract: | Starting from recently acquired or revised geophysical data in the fields of gravimetry, aeromagnetics, heat flow, seismic refraction profiling and seismic tomography a geodynarnic scenario of the northern Appennines - northern Tyrrhenian Sea system is presented which shows, in a transect from Corsica basin to Northern Adriatic Sea, the following structural provinces: i) a western extended area, induding inner Tuscany and Tyrrhenian Sea, characterized by an astenospheric uplift, where extensional processes dominate; ii) a centrai complex area, from pre-Apennines to foothills, where extensional or transtensional processes occurring at upper crustal levels, are piloted by compressive stresses documented at depth by earthquakes aligned in a west-dipping plane iii) a stable central-adriatic foreland. This a scenario confirms the simultaneity of compression and extension in adjacent sectors of the thrust and fold belt. A reappraisal of the Miocene tectonic evolution of northern Apennines is outlined transferring the present geodynamic model to that period. [...] |
