Abstract: This study represents a rìview of the behavior of P and S waves in porous media. The parameters influencing velocity variations in the presence of two solid phases; a liquid and solid phase; and a solid, liquid, and gaseous phase, are considered. In addition the velocity in the presence of rigid and non-consolìdated matrices is analyzed. Ali of these parameters are then related to the behavior of samples at àthmospheric prèssure, highen pressure, and as a function of temperature. An analysis of the theories which should take into account the velocity parameters ìs conducted in relation to the experimental data obtained by various authors. Moreover, the real significance of these parameters in ·Connection with the caracteristics of porous media and the problems encountered in tryìng to correlate these parameters is discussed. Finally, it is shown how the proper utilization of the velocity parameters can reduce the uncertainty connected with the correlation of geophysic parameters with porous media characteristics.
