Abstract: The north-eastern border of the Lazio-Abruzzi platform is dissected by the shear zone Rigopiano-Bussi-Rivisondoli (RBR). This is a N-S oriented belt, marked by flower structures with right-lateral en échelon arrangement. Early Pliocene shearing on the RBR appears to be synchronous with the anticlockwise rotations of the Gran Sasso thrust belt up to 90°, supported by paleomagnetic data tòo. This setting suggests that partitioning of rotational strain along the RBR has accommodated the otherwise inhibited propagation of thrusts, blocked against the Maiella foreland buttress.
