Abstract: The Rieti basin, like other intramontane basins in Cen­trai Italy (Norcia, Leonessa, Fucino, L'Aquila, Sulmona), is a post-orogenic continental intramontane basin character­ized by recent tectonic evolution. The basin is elongated NNW-SSE and is filled by continental conglomeratic sedi­ments Plio-Quaternary in age. The outcropping thickness is 500 meters. An analysis of sedimentologica! and facies charac­teristics was carried out. Several villafranchian and post­villafranchian units are found. The oldest units are the low­er depositional unit (UDI) and the Calcariola-F.sso Canalic­chio unit (UCFC) related to the Lower Villafranchian. The UDI consists of massive conglomeratic body; the clasts per­taining to the umbro-sabine transitional facies. [...]
