Abstract: The marine deposits outcropping in the area near Cal­vello (near Potenza, S. Italy) belong to a piggy-back basin that formed above the extemal portion of the deforming roof­thrust system of Southern Apennine duplex chain. Although interrupted by two gaps of possible tectonic significance, the marine sedimentation lasted from the beginning of Upper Pliocene (zone MP14 sensu CITA) up to Santernian. [...]
