Abstract: | The Tyrrhenian-Apennines is interpreted as the result of a process of progressive eastward migration of an asymmetric intra- continental extensional strain field, which started in Middle- Late Miocene times and is stili going on. This process is responsible for the stretching and thinning of the Thyrrhenian lithosphere. In the crust, the extension is accomplished by simple shear deformations as the result of crustal blocks being pulled eastward, one from underneath the other. In the mantle lithosphere, it is accomplished by a combination of pure shear and large relative displacement on a westwarddipping detachment fault which passes through the entire lithosphere. [...] |
