Abstract

The Tyrrhenian-Apennines is interpreted as the result of a process of progressive eastward migration of an asymmetric intra- continental extensional strain field, which started in Middle- Late Miocene times and is stili going on. This pro­cess is responsible for the stretching and thinning of the Thyr­rhenian lithosphere. In the crust, the extension is accompli­shed by simple shear deformations as the result of crustal blocks being pulled eastward, one from underneath the other. In the mantle lithosphere, it is accomplished by a combination of pure shear and large relative displacement on a westward­dipping detachment fault which passes through the entire li­thosphere. [...]
