Abstract: The study area, located in the extemal part of the central­southem Marches between the River Potenza to the north and the River Tronto to the south (the Macerata and Fermo sectors) forms part of the peri-Adriatic Basin. During the Lower Pliocene and Lower Pleistocene, the morphological setting of this basin was affected by considerable synsedimentary activity. In particular, beginning in the Middle Pliocene and following the creation of submarine longitudinal ridges and transversal dislocations, sectors of different subsidence fragmented the basin into a series of dis­tinct depressions.
