Abstract: This paper presents a synthesis of investigations carried out over thirty years in the Marche region (centrai Italy), with the purpose of pointing out both genetic factors of socia! impact of gravitational movements. The main genetic factors are the following: a) widespread outcropping of marly-clayey formations; b) altemations of stiff and soft lythotypes; c) occurrence of stratigraphic and tectonic discontinuities in the rock mass; 4) high relief due extensional tectonics (fault slopes) and deep valley incision induced by Quaternary uplift; 5) occurrence of thick eluvial-colluvial deposits on slopes.
