Abstract: Thirty years after the presentation of the deep-desiccation model of the Mediterranean, this article tries to portray the state of the art on the Messinian "question" by presenting a substantial revision of the Apennine stratigraphic successions, as has been car­ried out by our research group during the last ten years. We believe that the Apennine perspective of the Messinian salinity crisis has been somewhat overlooked in the past, possibly because it can be considered an anomaly with respect to the paradygm represented by the desiccation theory.
